    Using gamification in software engineering teaching: Study case for software design

    Software engineering discipline needs promoting and responding to the demands of the software industry and their challenges, centered on the diversity and short delivery times in the projects. Looking to align with such demand, software engineering teaching has evolved incorporating newel strategies for increasing student motivation in the learning process. Gamification is one of them strategies centered on games principles, as the interactivity, ludic, and enhance engagement. This strategy, compared to other teaching techniques, improve the processes of conceptual understanding and learning. In this paper we propose a method, based on gamification, to design pedagogic instruments, comprising a strategy, techniques, and materials for teaching a specific subject. The goal of method is facilitate the gameful activities design in the classroom and then increase of motivation, cooperation and teamwork in participants, in the learning process of conceptual and practical subjects. The method was validated with the topic of software design in a course of a software engineering of the Universidad de Medellín (Colombia). In this pilot we establish improvement actions and recommendations incorporated in the final game version. © Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2019

    Abstract. The Rational Unified Process (RUP) is a comprehensive software development process framework emphasizing use-cases, architecture focus and an iterative approach. RUP is widely known and many organizations have tried to adopt it. Being a framework, RUP has to, in some way, be tailored to the specific context of use, no software development project is alike. This paper presents a case study of a Norwegian SME that tried to adopt RUP in the simplest way, by introducing the methodology by providing comprehensive documentation and some simple training. Our study shows that the use of RUP had some positive effects but also that the use has been scattered. Interviews with users of RUP show that there is a great need of better training and practical support in getting most value out of RUP. The key message is that if you consider taking RUP into use you have to invest resources in it. Training and support are key success factors. 1

    Part 1: Research PapersInternational audienceIntegrating practices and methods of Interaction Design and Usability into Software Engineering processes has posed some challenges. In this paper we extend a SE process to enable its instantiation as user centered in order to improve the usability level reachable by the final system. Also, we suggest a kind of a road map that enables software organizations to instantiate cumulative versions of this process to grow in their capability regarding the usability practices. The paper is organized in two parts. First, we describe de open source version of the Unified Process (OpenUP) and the ISO Usability Maturity Model (UMM-ISO) and present the results of an assessment made on the first to determine its conformity with the latter. In the second part we present an extension to OpenUP to fill the gaps discovered and report the highlights of an implementation of these contributions in a real project and the lessons learned
